  1. Bill says:

from 1992 looks interesting, I’ll have to pick it up for 10cents at the next gaarge sale in my neighborhood. It’s a couple dozen stories by different authors dealing with hypothetical alternate presidents. What if Aaron Burr had become president in 1804, for instance? It doesn’t postulate a Hubert Humphrey presidency but it does have a story of LBJ deciding to run for re-election in 68 and somehow this leads to a revolution, a dictatorship, and a 40-year war in Vietnam.Contrast that with the story of Barry Goldwater winning in 1964 and using Nuclear Weapons in Vietnam.I just thought it would be interesting to ponder a world without Nixon’s VP and then Nixon himself resigning, and putting into the White House a man who was elected to neither position.Hubert Humphrey was by no means an anti-war candidate; he explicitly supported Johnson’s policies, and all of the 1968 rioting was in opposition of Humphrey’s nomination.Mike, my earliest memories of the political process was the 1972 Election. Just the election itself. Over the next year or so my grade school teachers made it a point to tell us what kind of historic crossroads we were living in, with Agnew resigning and speculation that whomever Nixon appointed to his position might also take over for Nixon himself if he was impeached or resigned. I am eternally grateful that a grade school teacher told me to pay attention.I have taken the last year every opportunity to impress upon my own kids the historic nature of Obama’s candidacy and election. Hope it sticks. If so, they can recount to their own kids and grandkids their memories of what it was like to be aware of the significance of this year’s events as they happened.
